Kind comments from our customers…

‘Choosing Sutton Timber and English engineered ash flooring was the single best decision we made during the whole of our refurbishment.’

Mr P. Hallward – North London

‘Spending time at Sutton Timber today was a joyful experience. Being able to see the raw product and knowing it’s British grown is exactly what we were looking for. Really looking forward to our solid sycamore and ash flooring.’

‘We had 3 sets of oak garage doors to make for our client. I contacted Sutton’s to see if they could supply us with air dried oak boards machined to our specific design. Not only could they provide us with exactly what we needed the quality was excellent. We will definitely be using Sutton Timber again.’

‘We are absolutely delighted with the flooring, it really adds another dimension to our apartment making a perfect backdrop complimenting our style of decor. We received amazing service from Ben and his team throughout. From advising us on the choice of colour of the floor, to discussing the different styles available. Delivery and aftercare were all first class. I would definitely recommend Sutton Timber without hesitation.’

Mr & Mrs Meadows – North London

‘The character oak was of excellent quality and lovely to work with. Your recommendation to use Osmo for the finish on the floor was spot on. Your service and back up have been excellent.’

Pontefract, West Yorkshire

‘It has been reassuring to work with Sutton Timber who have helped source and supply much of the high quality, well seasoned English oak required for such a challenging project as the restoration of this historic vessel – Havengore.’

Will Taylor-Jones, Managing Director – Fox’s Marina

‘We are delighted with the beautiful elm flooring supplied by Sutton Timber for our wonderfully restored Library. The floor looks absolutely fabulous and yet is so practical. We’ve had many, many compliments on the excellence of the restoration and almost all have commented on the quality of the flooring. Thank you Sutton Timber.’

Chapter Clerk at Rochester Cathedral – Simon Lace

‘It is wonderful to see both clients and architects embracing English hardwoods. Using their natural beauty to create such fabulous designs to bring out the true character of the wood.’

Ben Sutton – Sutton Timber

‘The chestnut flooring we decided upon is just beautiful! The sinuous ripples in the grain and interesting tiger striping make it a real talking point. Having the same floor in the hall and living and dining areas gives the seamless and unfussy look we wanted. Ben was extremely helpful and patient, giving us helpful advice. Sam who laid the floor commented that the timber was some of the best he’d ever seen.’

Mary Hughes – Kent

‘I found it difficult to procure thick section oak in the UK I required for the large exterior windows and doors in my main house. After considerable research Sutton Timber was the only place I found who stocked matured thick section oak that was suitable. Sutton Timber have been extremely useful to me for construction of my wood conservatory, supplying large oak beams for internal and external use, plus cedar boards for inside the conservatory and fabulous solid oak boards for flooring.’

Mr Lees – Norfolk

‘I found Ben very professional and knowledgable about his products. My company used the elm timber he supplied on a old hall house kitchen floor and it looks fantastic. The quality is A plus and we will be using his company again for our restoration projects.’

Engineered floor – installing – a clients experience!

It is always good to have feedback from our customers. Recently we received a lovely testimonial/installation experience from a client who wanted to lay an engineered floor in the kitchen of his London home.

I found Sutton Timber via the internet, searching for hardwood engineered floors from sustainable sources. I was particularly keen on timber sourced within the UK, ideally from a tree that had fallen naturally. I was advised elm was listed and could only be used if it had come to a natural end. This appealed enormously. The website was very helpful and laid out in a style that was easy to follow and informative.

I had a number of conversations regarding engineered floors with Ben on the phone who was patient, very helpful and not pushy. I am not a professional fitter/carpenter and Ben inspired confidence in choosing this material for my kitchen. I have fitted one other engineered floor in my home using engineered boards so I had a little experience. I visited the yard at Sotterley Sawmills and was shown the product, and advised that it wasn’t going to fit in my estate! Delivery of the engineered floor arrived on time and as expected. Fitting proved reasonably straight forward. I floated the floor and the main difficulty was a single step down to the lower level where I decided to use a strip perpendicular to the boards running lengthways. I used a thin plank of off cut elm which I planed down and routed a groove into. A join to make the length was necessary and I was happy with the result. I have subsequently seen a different technique, omitting the strip but I am happy with how my solution turned out. Where no skirting was used, I used a little cork strip, which blends in well. So well in fact that I might have omitted the skirting entirely, maybe next time.

R. Leeney – London

‘We recently purchased elm from Sutton Timber for our kitchen. We were invited to the sawmills to view the timber where Ben showed us the range of elm available to us and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable giving us sound advice. The sawmill is pretty impressive in itself with the timber neatly stacked and working kilns, it was incredibly well organised. The finished kitchen, solid wood drawers, side panels and architrave look perfect. Plus the engineered elm flooring we have in the adjoining breakfast room looks fabulous. Thank you Ben for your help and we have already recommended you to lots of friends.’

Mr & Mrs Anthony – Suffolk

‘Sutton Timber has proved the perfect fit for what we’re trying to achieve at Hyrst. We wanted to produce a table and bench from traceable, British grown hardwood, specifically sycamore. With the expert help of Ben and Nick at the yard in Sotterley, I was able to select the right boards for the project. They even gave me details of where the sycamore was felled. The timber planed down beautifully; and the finished product should last for generations. I can now tell our own clients about the journey their furniture has made, from tree to table. Thank you Ben!’

Andrew Whittaker – Hyrst Furniture & Homeware

‘We recommend RHS Flooring to all our clients. Here’s a fabulous review from a very happy client. “The RHS team fitted exceptional quality English oak in my three reception rooms, all, stairs, landing and bedroom. Everyone remarks on how stunning it looks and how perfectly it is fitted. You would never know that the walls and sub floors were not perfectly even and that they had to complete extremely intricate calculations to make the stairs, floors and skirting boards line up immaculately. Richard is an amazingly talented craftsman who is a perfectionist about everything that he does from selection of planks to laying them, including designing features and details such as strings on stairs and half landings. He guards his floors jealously until he hands them over to you and takes pride in the wonderful job that he does. He has an artist’s eye and a perfectionist’s hand. The RHS team is a pleasure to have around while the work is being done and they really want you to be delighted with the job that they do. It would be impossible not to be. It was such a different experience from the contractors I have had before – almost no dust at all, whereas before every surface had been covered in thick dust every day – and the work was of a vastly superior quality. I have no hesitation in recommending them – they do get very booked up, but they are worth waiting for.’

‘After a great conversation with Ben and a visit to their sawmill it was clear that Sutton Timber were the kind of company that really took care over it’s sourcing, seasoning and production. It was a long drive but absolutely worthwhile. We were searching for a wood floor with real character, ideally with lots of visible complex structures. Ben was able to advise us on the options available and on viewing the elm we knew we had found the perfect choice for our engineered floor. We also had a great tour of their facilities, getting to see all the additional things they produce, from wooden bowls to the amazing furniture Thomas makes. In fact Thomas was working on a chair of such beautiful form and materials, we had to ask him to make us one, and a dressing table to go with it… We left Sutton Timber with a real understanding that these guys have an innate love and feel for wood and it’s very infectious.’

‘After starting an online search for light coloured engineering wood flooring (I knew I didn’t want oak) Sutton Timber was a really fortunate find. I extensively researched the commonly stocked engineering woods. When the sample of ash flooring arrived from Sutton Timber, it immediately exceeded the quality of the other engineering woods, was in the same price bracket, and what was more, it was exactly what I was looking for. Ben’s passion for his product was obvious throughout and he was with me from order through to delivery!! My floor is better than I thought it would be, and I take delight seeing a different part of the ash tree every day! Thank you Ben for producing such beautiful wood!’

Nina Jones – Berkshire

‘We approached Sutton timber as the usual flooring shops didn’t really give us the quality we were looking for. Ben was really helpful with my questions, valued advice as we were laying the floor ourselves. Very pleased with the finished result.’

Mrs & Mrs M Amond

‘I used Sutton Timber’s first grade solid English oak in my three reception rooms, two cupboards, hall, stairs, landing and bedroom. My floor fitter said it was the best oak in England and it is hard to believe anything else. The wood is simply beautiful – a calm, clear, grain with just the right amount of variation and movement in it. I never get tired of looking at it and it draws admiring compliments as soon as visitors get through the door. Ben is amazingly knowledgeable about wood and finishes and is fastidious when selecting each plank. He was really helpful at every step of the process, from suggesting choices of timber to organising delivery and advising on acclimatising and preparing the wood. His love of timber is evident and his passion for it is apparent in the quality of the wood that he supplies. I have no hesitation in recommending Sutton Timber, as the quality of their products and service is second to none.’
